There is an increasing recognition of the role a dynamic agricultural sector can play in poverty and hunger reduction. Actions and initiatives to achieve the MDGs need to be adequately funded through a combination of public and private resources. We are encouraged by the fact that policy makers are taking concrete steps in support of a larger role for agriculture and rural development in poverty reduction: African Ministers of Agriculture and Finance continue to recognize the critical role of agriculture in promoting broad based development and speeding up the process of integrating emerging African/Asian economies. Strengthening the link between goals and resources is particularly important for the common efforts to reduce hunger and poverty through broad-based agricultural and rural development and enhanced access to food. Action focusing on the rural poor and the hungry has suffered for too long from lack of adequate funding, despite the well-known fact that the majority of extremely poor live in rural areas and that hunger is a major cause of poverty. MDG Review continues to invite the private sector to take a much active role in promoting broad based development, through showcasing their technologies and solutions. Check out some of the case studies done by those who share our common goal in promoting the MDGs as the framework for development |
